Our Story

Meet Adam, Brandy, Aria, & Harbor

For twenty years, Adam talked about boat life the way some people talk about winning the lottery. He spent his Coast Guard career dreaming of the day he could finally sail off into the sunset on his own boat. Brandy spent those same twenty years fighting the inevitable, occasionally rolling her eyes at all the “one day when we live on a boat” conversations, but secretly warming up to the idea of chasing turquoise water and non-stop travel.

The Leggett family has bounced around the United States and even Germany, so the idea of moving onto a floating home didn’t scare them nearly as much as figuring out where to store snacks and homeschooling.

In December 2024, the dream finally became reality. They cast off from Maryland and haven’t stopped moving since. As they hit their one-year cruising anniversary on December 5th, they’ve managed to make our way down the Thorny Path, across to the Bahamas, through the Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico, along the Virgin Islands, down the island chain, spending hurricane season in Grenada, then over to the ABCs, onto Colombia, and are now gearing up for Panama.

Along the way, the crew has taken on everything from short hops to a four-night five-day passage, with plenty more long ones ahead as we prepare for a Pacific crossing. The kids have become pros at eating snacks underway, managing anchor duty, and testing out their new swimming pool at every new destination. Adam has mastered “boat yoga,” otherwise known as fixing things in impossible spaces. Brandy has become a provisioning ninja, expert passage-napper and is even standing more than one watch.

And the boat? Kaikoa has carried the crew safely through big seas, calm anchorages, unexpected weather, and a whole lot of learning curves. If she had a resume, it would already be three pages long.

It’s been a year of adventure, chaos, courage, and a whole lot of laughs. This salty crew of four is just getting started!

Adam

Adam hails from the central coast of California, where he spent his youth riding waves, scaling cliffs, trekking through the wilderness with a backpack, and tinkering on his beloved VW buses. And as if that weren't enough, he also discovered his love of free diving, spearfishing, and collects custom ukuleles.

Brandy

A small-town girl from Oregon with a heart drawn to the mountains and rivers. While sailing has been a new adventure for her, she's gradually conquering her sea sickness. She loves to travel, read adventure novels, paddleboard, hike, and spend time with her family and friends.

Aria

Aria is 13 and has officially discovered her true form: a fish. She free dives to 40 feet like it’s nothing and has proudly become our resident mermaid. She loves diving with her dad and chasing fish through the reefs, and she even earned her scuba certification in Bonaire so they can stay underwater longer and explore the ocean floor together.

When she’s not submerged, Aria is usually creating entire worlds of her own. She sketches anime, designs characters, and writes graphic novels and storylines that she brings to life in her sketchbooks.

On the boat, she helps manage anchor duty and stands the first night watch, proving she’s just as capable above the surface as she is below it.

Harbor

A pint-sized adventurer with the body of an 8-year-old and the spirit of a cranky 75-year-old pirate. Unapologetically set in his ways, he lives for sharks, Minecraft, LEGO, witty jokes, and the occasional unforgettable dance move. This wild little man has played harmonica for sharks in the Bahamas, learned to drive the dinghy this season, and finally found his sea legs—proudly keeping his lunch to himself instead of “feeding the fish.

Meet Kaikoa

Our Dolphin 460, is a performance cruising catamaran designed and built by Phelippe Poureau.

Equipped with a tall carbon rig, daggerboards, and Divinicel-cored hulls, the Dolphin 460 is optimized for enhanced performance. The daggerboards provide improved upwind performance and stability, while the Divinicel-cored hulls offer strength and weight reduction, enhancing overall performance (as long as we don’t weigh it down with all our stuff).

Three staterooms, two heads (bathrooms) a set of bunks, and a small “office”. She’s definitely not as spacious as the floating condo-catamarans, but she has plenty of space for this family of four!

She’s needs a little bit of a refit and a lot of elbow grease to get her ready for her next big adventure.
